The ŠUP entrance talent exam: what to expect
Admission to the Secondary School of Applied Arts isn't decided by school grades alone. Applicants complete three practical tasks at the school and bring their home work — a portfolio of pieces made at home or in art classes.
Drawing from a model
Observational still-life study: form, proportions, light and shadow. Time allowed: 90 minutes.
Colour composition
Imaginative composition in colour, in any technique — also 90 minutes.
Modelling
A third 90-minute task, this time three-dimensional.
Home portfolio
Your child’s portfolio of artwork. The committee evaluates it alongside the exam tasks.
How we prepare at the studio
In the 12–15 age group, children draw from life, build colour compositions and model in 3D — the exact skills tested in the exam. Along the way, they build the portfolio they will bring with them.
Still-life drawing
Every week from real objects: form, proportions, light and shadow.
Colour and composition
Watercolour, tempera, acrylic — and assignments where children invent their own compositions.
Modelling
Modelling in polymer clay as preparation for the third exam task.
Portfolio
We keep your child’s artwork safe and select the strongest pieces together before the application.

Who it's for
For Year 8 and Year 9 pupils considering a secondary school of arts — even if they have not chosen a department yet. ŠUP in Bratislava offers programmes ranging from graphic and industrial design to digital painting and interior design.
When to start
The sooner the better, so there are more pieces for the portfolio. Applications close on 20 February and exams take place in late March, so autumn is the ideal time to begin.

Who prepares your child
Alina Koroleva is an artist and teacher from a family of visual artists, teaching children from age 5 as well as teenagers at the studio. With every ŠUP applicant, she practises all three exam tasks and helps select the portfolio pieces. We do not promise admission — we promise readiness.
More about Alina and the studio on artizo.skParents’ questions
Do you guarantee that my child will be admitted?
No — no one can guarantee admission. We help your child prepare thoroughly: practising the exam tasks and putting together a strong portfolio.
When should we start?
The sooner the better, to build up more work for the portfolio. Applications are due by 20 February and exams are held at the end of March. At the trial lesson, we will tell you where your child currently stands.
Does my child already need to be good at drawing?
No. They start from where they are, and in a small group they get the individual attention they need. What matters is the desire to create.
Do you also prepare children for private art schools?
Yes. Private art schools and ŠUP schools outside Bratislava set similar entrance exams — drawing, colour composition and a home portfolio. We will review the specific school’s brief together at the trial lesson.
What language are the lessons taught in?
In Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian or English — depending on the group. Because the entrance exam is in Slovak, we also practise the technical art terms in Slovak.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Let us know at least 24 hours in advance and we will make up the lesson in another group. For later cancellations, the reserved spot is charged in full.
How does payment work?
By bank transfer against an invoice, always at the start of the period.
